The coelacanth was long believed to have died out 66 million years ago, until 1938 when one was caught alive off the South African coast–virtually unchanged from its cretaceous ancestors. After having survived multiple mass extinctions over millions of years, they are now prized as museum artifacts, and face a serious threat of annihilation.
